Just finished editing what I think is one of the best reads in our portfolio, it’s entitled the Creed Series and this particular book in the series is book four, Kentucky Pride. But I am referring to the entire series, not just one book. Maynard Villers is the reader for this series and he has done a magnificent job. I edited the first four books so far and the reading is spectacular. After listening to every word in all four books, I have wondered how anyone could have done a better job. He changed his voice for each character and made each one seem believable to the point that one wondered if it was the same reader. Credit also needs to go to the author, Larry Names, who wrote the books. The story is about the aftermath of the Civil War between the states and the reconstruction period in Texas. The main character, Clete Slater, alias Slater Creed returns to his plantation in Texas only to find that Blue Coats have taken it over and he is turned out homeless along with the rest of the returning Confederate troops. Slater is not one to turn tail and run. This results in a running battle, politically and physically with the Union Army. He eventually becomes a fugitive and his adventures begin. But he leaves the love of his life in Texas and vows to return one day after he clears his name. His adventures take him to Mexico where he becomes involved in their civil war, then back to Texas where a small town is being brutally governed by the Blue Coats. Then off to Louisiana and Kentucky for more adventure. His favorite line is “I’m from Texas and I can kill you in the wink of a eye”, when confronted by those who would fight him. Larry Names has researched the period he writes about and the historical information in the book is absolutely correct. Not only is the story a page turner but it is a history lesson as well. I would recommend this twelve book series to anyone, and can’t imagine someone not enjoying this series.
